About At the Cross
#

The verses began as Isaac Watts’s hymn “Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed,” published in 1707. The refrain most people picture, “At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,” was added later in the nineteenth century along with the tune now attached to it, which is why older hymnals sometimes print the words without it.

The whole thing stays within one octave, C to C, so it sits easily on a 6-hole ocarina. The verse and refrain reuse a short phrase, which makes it quick to memorize and a good piece for practicing an even, singing tone.

At the Cross Lyrics
#

Alas, and did my Saviour bleed,
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

At the cross, at the cross
Where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day.
