About the Hungarian Gypsy Scale (E)#
This is a Hungarian gypsy scale, also called the Hungarian minor. What sets it apart are two wide steps, augmented seconds, that jump a step and a half where an ordinary scale would take a half or a whole step. Those gaps give it the dark, exotic pull people recognize from Eastern European folk music. On the ocarina the leaps are the challenge: your fingers travel across several holes at once and still have to land in tune. Run it slowly at first. It stretches your reach and trains your ear to hear those unusual intervals rather than the familiar major and minor ones.
